The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) is a mandatory safety legislation enforced by Transport for London (TfL). It requires all HGVs over 12 tonnes to hold a valid safety permit to operate within Greater London. This law applies to all vehicles, including those visiting from overseas.
As of October 2024, the standard was significantly upgraded to the Progressive Safe System (PSS). If your fleet operates in London today, you must ensure your technology meets these modern, active safety requirements.
Understanding Your Star Rating Every HGV is assigned a ‘star rating’ (0–5) based on the driver’s direct field of vision from the cab as it left the factory. Crucially, this rating does not account for any aftermarket safety systems you may have previously fitted.

0, 1, or 2 Stars: Your vehicle is legally required to be retrofitted with a certified Progressive Safe System (PSS) to obtain a permit.
